rule of thirds

This assignment was about capturing an object or a person using the rule of thirds. The idea of the rule of thirds is to imagine a grid and an to place the object so that it takes one third of the grid. While doing all of this the pictures have to be in black and white so that it draws the audiences attention more towards the object and not towards the colors.

  1. Your photos do show the rule of thirds. I especially like how you used the poles to divide the up the picture in the fourth photo.

  2. Well done. The photos really show an understanding of the Rule of Thirds. The fourth photo in the set confused me for a second, but now I think it was a very smart way to experiment with the idea we were given.

  3. i loved your pictures max! they were all very clear and showed the rule of thirds in a successful and comprehensive manner. the shadows in many of your pictures help make the somewhat simple subject more interesting through the varied values. if i had to suggest one thing i would try applying the rule of thirds in a horizontal manner not just vertical.

  4. max these photos are really good. you really do know the rule well but more importantly, you put it to good use. i had conflicted feelings about the library photo because, although im all for negative space, theres not very much contrast in it and it comes off looking a little bit like one of those color swatches at home depot. that part was the constructive criticism. now what i liked about them. most of the others have really great contrast and a few people mentioned how they liked the two poles but what i really like is the car in between them, a frozen moment where the driver, the center and possibly subject of this photo, is completely anonymous. this is then repeated later on in the one with the motorcycle- the drivers window is blocked by a pole, and the subject of the motorcycle in the foreground makes it sleeker and better composed, pointing off into the distance, but not without a sense of danger, as the car looks ready to cut it off, an action movie in arrested development without its actors. the other one i liked was of mike, half his face shadowed and half engulfed with sunlight, which is then repeated in the background with the corner of the building, an alliteration of the eye, and lines contrasting curves
